In contrast, the valley soil produces their signature Petit Manseng alongside other white varieties.
Of course, wine is not the only reason to visit Madison, VA. The pristine vineyards and surrounding farmlands come alive with seasonal farmers markets, live music, and chef events showcasing local artisanal food. Barboursville Vineyards is one of the most historic Virginia wineries, built on the grounds of the Barbour Mansion, an estate designed by Thomas Jefferson for his friend James Barbour, the 19th Governor of Virginia.
Where Jefferson failed to realize his vision of creating a Virginia wine culture, Italian winemaker Gianni Zonin would succeed after taking over the estate in 1976. Zonin worked alongside renowned winemaker Luca Paschina to establish several vintage wines native to the state. Barboursville Vineyards earned widespread recognition for its winemaking, a reputation that won the selection to serve Queen Elizabeth II when she visited Virginia in 2007.
Recently, Barboursville Vineyards won the 2025 Virginia Governor’s Cup for its exceptional contributions to Virginia’s wine industry. Visitors can enjoy the award-winning Octagon 2020, a blend of the estate’s Bordeaux varietals. The vineyards came later in 1998 when they hired a vineyard consultant and transplanted the first set of California grape vines. Working alongside winemaker Michael Shaps and later Matthieu Finot, the King Family sought to create wine varieties that paid homage to the history of wine while showcasing the unique terroir of Virginia.
King Family Vineyards’ wines have earned several awards over the years for their complex red blends such as the Mountain Plains Red 2021, a Bordeaux-style red blend named a 2025 Governor’s Case Winner. In 2024, they also won the Virginia Governor’s Cup for their 2019 Meritage—a blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.

The property was originally claimed by John Carter, the Secretary of the Virginia Colony, and remained a notable landmark throughout the Commonwealth’s history.
The Matthews family planted new grape vines over the remnants of a previous vineyard in 2000, with a focus on producing fruit-forward wines that are enjoyable young. Their winemaking philosophy was to limit the amount of intervention to create the most vibrant and sustainable wine.
6. Gabriele Rausse Winery (Charlottesville, VA)
Location: 3247 Carters Mountain Rd, Charlottesville, VA 22902
Signature Wines: Blanc de Noir Sparkling 2019, Cabernet Sauvignon 2023, Nebbiolo Reserve 2022, Vin Gris de Pinot Noir
Gabriele Rausse is known as the “Father of Virginia Wine,” an apt title considering his instrumental role in establishing over 100 vineyards and wineries along Virginia’s countryside. The Italian native originally came to Virginia alongside Gianni Zonin to plant the European Vitis Vinifera grapes that would become the foundation for Barboursville Vineyards.
Since then, Rausse has continued to refine his craft and share his expertise. His incredible portfolio is defined by beloved properties, including Blenheim Vineyards, White Hall Vineyards, Jefferson Vineyards, and Afton Mountain Vineyards among others.
In 1997, Rausse founded the Gabriele Rausse Winery, a hidden gem featuring small-batch, old-world style wines. The winery houses a rustic tasting room that invites tasters to connect the wine with the local environment. Finally, aspiring wine professionals can even learn from Rausses’ oenology and viticulture classes at Piedmont Virginia Community College.

8. Ankida Ridge Vineyards (Amherst, VA)
Location: 1304 Franklin Creek Rd, Amherst, VA 24521
Signature Wines: Pinot Noir 2022, Chardonnay 2022, Nouveau style Gamay, Patiné
Perched high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ankida Ridge Vineyards is one of the few wineries in Virginia specializing in cool-climate wines. They’re known as the first winery to plant Pinot Noir successfully in Virginia, and their 2010 Pinot Noir vintage received high accolades.
Part of their success lies in the Virginia winery’s unique location. Ankida Ridge Vineyards sits in a thermal belt overlooking a valley. As a result, cold mountain air drifts through the property toward the valley, keeping the vineyard at a relatively consistent temperature. The vines do not face spring frost and rarely see morning dew, which protects them from disease.
