UVA Medical Center hires three times a year, averaging between 600–800 applications each session for about 80 job opportunities. Applicants have increased as advanced programs have become available, with many being alumni from entry-level EWYL programs.

7 Entry-Level Programs at Earn While You Learn

The UVA Earn While You Learn program has expanded its innovative clinical education model to include seven entry-level programs for high-demand healthcare roles.

1. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

EMTs provide emergency care and transport for patients in crisis, assessing and stabilizing them before hospital transfer. The 16-week EMT program is designed to have 10-16 hours of homework per week and clinical rotations that may include weekend or evening shifts. Upon completion, trainees are prepared to take the National Registry exam and begin their healthcare careers.

2. Phlebotomy/Specimen Management Technician (SMT)

Phlebotomists collect and process blood samples for testing, while SMTs handle, verify, and prepare all laboratory specimens to ensure accurate tracking and analysis within UVA’s clinical laboratories. The phlebotomy course includes clinical rotations and an additional eight weeks of specialized education in either phlebotomy or Specimen Management Technology, preparing candidates for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification exam.

3. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

CMAs work primarily in clinic settings, assisting with patient care, diagnostic procedures, and administrative tasks under the supervision of a healthcare provider. The CMA course is three months long and includes weekly clinical rotations at local clinics. It prepares candidates to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification exam upon completion.

4. Patient Care Technician (PCT)

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) provide essential patient-centered care under the supervision of a nurse, performing duties similar to CNAs but with additional skills such as wound care, IV removal, EKGs, and bladder scans. The eight-week PCT course concludes with clinical rotations at UVA inpatient units, preparing trainees to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification exam upon completion.

5. Pharmacy Technician

The UVA Pharmacy Technician Training Program is an ASHP/ACPE-accredited, 426.5-hour program designed to provide standardized training that meets state requirements and prepares participants for state or national certification exams. Combining self-paced online coursework, simulation training, and hands-on experience in UVA’s pharmacy, the program can be completed in 9–12 months (up to 2 years maximum), after which candidates continue working as pharmacy technicians upon earning their Virginia registration.

6. Sterile Processing Technician

Sterile Processing Technicians play a crucial role in patient safety by cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and maintaining medical instruments used throughout the Medical Center, ensuring infection prevention and supporting safe surgical care. The 13-week course at UVA Medical Center includes 420 hours of integrated clinical experience and prepares candidates to take the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) exam through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).

7. Access Associate

Access Associates (AAs) and Patient Access Specialists (PASs) are often the first point of contact for patients, collecting and verifying information, coordinating appointments, and ensuring a welcoming, organized experience throughout registration and admission. The eight-week class prepares trainees for roles across clinics, call centers, the Emergency Department, and other patient access areas, concluding with a skills-based competency assessment.
